Hyvä in 60 seconds
- What: a replacement storefront (frontend) for Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce, built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js instead of Luma's RequireJS, jQuery and Knockout.js.
- Why: far less JavaScript, so pages typically load in under a second and pass Core Web Vitals.
- Cost: the theme has been free and open source since 10 November 2025. You pay for the work to adopt it, plus optional add-ons like Hyvä Checkout.
- Needs: Magento 2.4.4-p9 or later, PHP 8.1–8.4, and Node.js 20+ for building styles.
- Risk: extensions with storefront features need Hyvä compatibility; your data, URLs and backend stay the same.
What is the Hyvä theme?
Hyvä is a frontend theme for Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce that replaces the default Luma storefront with a much lighter stack built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js. It changes only how pages are rendered for shoppers; Magento's catalog, checkout logic, admin, orders and integrations are untouched.
The name comes from the Finnish word hyvä, "good". You'll see it written as Hyvä, Hyva, Hyvä Themes or Hyvä Magento; it is all the same product. Hyvä was created by Willem Wigman, first released in 2021, and has become the most widely adopted alternative to Luma in the Magento ecosystem.
How Hyvä works (and why it's faster)
Luma loads RequireJS, jQuery, jQuery UI and Knockout.js on every page and builds much of the page in the browser. Hyvä removes that stack entirely:
- Server-rendered PHP templates using Magento's normal layout XML, blocks and view models, so developers keep working the Magento way.
- Tailwind CSS instead of LESS. Only the classes your templates use end up in the stylesheet.
- Alpine.js for interactivity (menus, galleries, swatches, mini-cart) with a tiny runtime instead of hundreds of kilobytes of JavaScript.
| Metric | Typical Luma store | Typical Hyvä store |
|---|---|---|
| Lighthouse performance (mobile) | 30–50 | 95+ |
| Largest Contentful Paint | ~4 seconds | Under 1 second |
| JavaScript shipped | Hundreds of KB | About 90% less |
Figures are typical of the stores we migrate; your results depend on hosting, images and third-party scripts. To see where you stand today, run your key pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the "real user" (field) data, not just the lab score.
Licences and real costs in 2026
On 10 November 2025 (announced on 6 November 2025), the Hyvä theme became free and open source under the OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licences, the same family Magento Open Source uses. You install it with a free licence key from your hyva.io account. The rest of the Hyvä product line is still commercial:
| Product | What it does | Licence (as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Hyvä Theme | The storefront itself | Free, open source |
| Hyvä Checkout | Fast, configurable checkout built on Magewire | €1,000 one-time per Magento installation; optional support & updates plan from year two |
| Hyvä UI | Ready-made components: headers, footers, menus, sliders and more | Separate paid product for new users (existing paid-theme licensees keep access) |
| Hyvä Commerce / Enterprise | Merchant tools and enterprise features | Commercial; priced by Hyvä |
For most merchants, the licence is now the smallest part of the budget. The real costs are:
- Getting onto Hyvä: a ready-made theme setup from $499, or a migration of an existing store from $999. Complex stores are quoted after an audit.
- Extension compatibility: often free (vendor modules), otherwise a custom compatibility module, typically one to five developer days each.
- Optional add-ons: Hyvä Checkout or Hyvä UI if you want them. (On our custom-design builds for new stores, we cover Hyvä UI.)
- Upkeep: updates and fixes, from $150 a month on our maintenance plans; the annual plan includes a migration.
Licence prices are set by Hyvä and can change; check hyva.io before you budget.
System requirements
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Magento / Adobe Commerce | 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p7, 2.4.7-p1 or higher |
| PHP | 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4 (PHP 7.4 is no longer supported) |
| Node.js | 20 or higher, for the Tailwind build (run it in development or CI, not on production) |
| Older Magento versions | Only older Hyvä releases (before 1.3.11) support them; upgrading Magento first is strongly recommended |
Individual compatibility modules can have their own, stricter requirements (for example a newer PHP version), so check each one you plan to use.
Extension compatibility
Extensions fall into three groups:
- Backend-only (ERP sync, feeds, admin tools): work on Hyvä unchanged.
- Storefront features with a compatibility module: many large vendors publish one, and Hyvä maintains a public compatibility tracker. Since the open-source switch, compatibility modules are also available with the free licence key.
- Storefront features with no compatibility: need a custom compatibility module that rewrites only the frontend part using Alpine.js.
Classify every enabled extension before you commit to a budget or timeline. It is the single biggest source of surprises in Hyvä projects.
How to install Hyvä (step by step)
These are the core steps from Hyvä's documentation. Always do them on a development or staging copy first.
- Create a free account at hyva.io and generate a free Packagist licence key in your dashboard.
- Add the key to Composer:
composer config --auth http-basic.hyva-themes.repo.packagist.com token YOUR_KEY - Add Hyvä's repository:
composer config repositories.private-packagist composer https://hyva-themes.repo.packagist.com/YOUR_PROJECT/ - Install the theme:
composer require hyva-themes/magento2-default-theme - Register it:
bin/magento setup:upgrade - Create a child theme for your brand and build its Tailwind CSS with Node.js 20+.
- Select your theme under Content → Design → Configuration.
- In production mode, deploy static content:
bin/magento setup:static-content:deploy - Disable Magento's default storefront captcha (Hyvä uses its own approach):
bin/magento config:set customer/captcha/enable 0
On a fresh store that's roughly a day's work. On an existing store, installing is the easy part; rebuilding your customisations and making extensions compatible is what takes the time. That's a migration, and our migration checklist walks through it.
Is Hyvä right for your store?
Hyvä is usually a strong fit if most of these are true:
- Your store fails Core Web Vitals or feels slow on phones
- You plan to stay on Magento or Adobe Commerce for the next few years
- Frontend changes are slow or expensive today
- You can run Magento 2.4.4-p9+ and PHP 8.1+ (or plan to upgrade)
- Most of your storefront extensions have, or can get, Hyvä compatibility
Think twice if you're about to replatform away from Magento, or if your store depends on several niche storefront extensions with no compatibility and no budget to build it.
Moving an existing store to Hyvä
Typical timelines depend on where you're coming from:
| Current theme | Typical timeline | Main work |
|---|---|---|
| Luma | ~2 weeks | Port customisations to Hyvä templates |
| Porto | 3–4 weeks | Rebuild Porto menu, sliders and widgets |
| PWA Studio | 3–5 weeks | Move React features back into Magento |
| Other / custom | 2–5 weeks | Depends on templates and extensions |
