Comparison

Porto vs Hyvä for Magento 2

Porto is one of the best-selling Magento themes on ThemeForest; Hyvä is the fast, free frontend many Porto stores now move to. Here's how they compare, what moving actually involves, and how to keep your Porto look.

The short answer

Porto gives you lots of ready-made layouts and a big settings panel; Hyvä gives you speed and simpler code. Porto is built on Luma's RequireJS and jQuery stack and adds its own sliders and modules, so Porto stores are often slower than plain Luma. If mobile speed, Core Web Vitals or conversion matter, Hyvä is the better long-term choice, and your Porto design can be rebuilt on it.

What is the Porto theme?

Porto is a premium, multi-purpose Magento 2 theme from Smartwave, sold on ThemeForest. It ships with dozens of demo designs, a mega menu, sliders, product widgets and a large admin settings panel, powered by a set of Smartwave modules. That makes it quick to get a polished store without custom design work.

We have not found an official Hyvä edition of Porto (as of October 2026). Because Porto depends on RequireJS and jQuery, which Hyvä removes, a Porto store can't simply be switched to Hyvä; its features have to be rebuilt.

Porto features and their Hyvä equivalents

This is what a Porto-to-Hyvä migration actually rebuilds. Most Porto features have a lean Hyvä equivalent:

Porto featureOn Hyvä
Porto mega menuHyvä UI mega menu or a custom Alpine.js menu, with CMS-managed content
Revolution / Owl slidersLightweight slider component that doesn't shift the layout
Product widgets (new, featured, sale)Server-rendered product sliders and grids
Header and footer variantsHyvä UI headers and footers, or your design rebuilt in Tailwind
Theme settings panelBrand colours, fonts and spacing in Tailwind config; content stays in CMS blocks
Quick view, AJAX cart, sticky headerSmall Alpine.js components
Custom features written for Porto's JavaScriptRewritten for Alpine.js; budget for these explicitly

That last row is where Porto migrations surprise people. Customisations built on Porto's RequireJS and jQuery code don't carry over, so list them during the audit.

Performance

Porto keeps everything that makes Luma slow and adds more: carousel libraries, lazy-loading scripts, animation code and CSS for every demo layout, whether you use it or not. Late-loading homepage sliders are a common cause of poor LCP and layout shift on Porto stores. Hyvä ships only the CSS your templates use and a tiny runtime, so the first screen paints quickly and stays stable.

Cost of ownership

Porto is cheap to start: one ThemeForest licence per site. It costs more over time, because slower pages lose conversions and every change or Magento upgrade takes longer on a heavy theme. Hyvä's core is free; the investment is the migration (Porto projects start from $999 and are quoted after an audit). After that, changes are cheaper and performance stops being a recurring project.

Moving from Porto to Hyvä

  1. Audit: list your Porto demo, settings, CMS blocks, Smartwave modules, other extensions and custom JavaScript.
  2. Decide on design: rebuild your current look pixel-perfect, or refresh it using Hyvä UI components.
  3. Rebuild components: menu, sliders, widgets and templates as Hyvä components; keep content editable in the admin.
  4. Compatibility: install or build Hyvä compatibility for remaining extensions.
  5. QA and launch: SEO crawl, devices and checkout, then a zero-downtime switch; remove unused Porto modules afterwards.

Most Porto migrations take three to four weeks. See our Porto to Hyvä migration service.

Frequently asked questions

We haven't found an official Hyvä edition of Porto as of October 2026. Porto is built on Luma's RequireJS and jQuery stack, so it has to be rebuilt on Hyvä rather than switched.

No. Hyvä Checkout is built for Hyvä storefronts, while Porto uses the Luma checkout. Porto stores that want Hyvä Checkout move the storefront to Hyvä first, often in the same project.

Porto adds sliders, widgets and extra scripts on top of Luma's JavaScript stack, so pages download and run far more code than they need. Large images and late-loading sliders often make it worse.

For a brand-new store we usually recommend starting on Hyvä instead: the theme is free, faster on mobile, and you avoid a migration later. A ready-made Hyvä theme gives you a similar quick start to a Porto demo.
