The short answer
For most Magento stores, Hyvä delivers the speed people hoped PWA Studio would bring, with one codebase, native extension support and much lower cost. PWA Studio can still suit teams that need an app-like, offline-capable experience and have dedicated React and GraphQL developers.
Two opposite architectures
PWA Studio is Adobe's toolkit for a headless storefront in React. The frontend is a separate application (usually based on the Venia reference store) that talks to Magento over GraphQL and is served by its own Node.js layer (UPWARD).
Hyvä stays inside Magento. Pages are rendered by Magento's PHP templates with Tailwind CSS and a little Alpine.js. There is no second application, no separate deployment and no GraphQL dependency for the storefront.
Side-by-side comparison
| PWA Studio | Hyvä | |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Headless React app + GraphQL | Server-rendered Magento theme |
| Codebases | Two (Magento + PWA) | One |
| Extension support | Each storefront feature needs GraphQL + React work | Lightweight Hyvä compatibility modules |
| First page load | Heavy JavaScript app must boot | Ready-to-display HTML |
| SEO | Depends on a correct server-side rendering setup | Complete HTML on every request |
| Hosting | Magento + Node.js layer | Magento only |
| Skills needed | React, GraphQL, Node.js and Magento | Magento, Tailwind, Alpine.js |
| Licence | Free (open source) | Free (open source since Nov 2025) |
| Typical time to launch | Months | Days to weeks |
Performance where it counts
A well-built PWA feels fast once it has loaded, because navigation happens inside the app. The first visit is the hard part: the browser must download and start a large JavaScript application before the page is usable. That first visit is what Core Web Vitals measure and what most shoppers arriving from search experience.
Hyvä optimises the first visit. Pages arrive as finished HTML and need very little JavaScript, so they are fast on the first view and every view after.
Total cost of ownership
Both are free to license, so the difference is in running costs. A PWA Studio storefront means two codebases to maintain, a GraphQL layer to extend for every new feature or extension, extra hosting for the Node.js layer, and a smaller pool of specialists. Hyvä keeps everything in one Magento codebase that most Magento developers can work on, with no extra infrastructure.
Roadmap and long-term risk
Before investing further in PWA Studio, check Adobe's current PWA Studio release notes and roadmap. Several agencies have publicly questioned how actively it is being developed, and a smaller community means fewer ready-made integrations. Hyvä, by contrast, has a large partner network and, since going open source, a broader contributor base. Whichever you choose, base the decision on the activity you can see in each project's releases.
Decision matrix
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Want top Core Web Vitals and SEO with minimal complexity | Hyvä |
| Rely on many Magento extensions | Hyvä |
| Have a small or mixed development team | Hyvä |
| Need offline use or an installable, app-like experience | PWA Studio (or another headless option) |
| Already have an in-house React team and a mature GraphQL layer | PWA Studio can make sense |
