The state of Hyvä in 2026
- The Hyvä theme is free and open source (since 10 November 2025).
- Hyvä UI, Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce and Hyvä Enterprise are paid products.
- Current releases need Magento 2.4.4-p9+ and PHP 8.1–8.4.

Hyvä Theme becomes free and open source
Announced on 6 November 2025 at Meet Magento Netherlands and effective 10 November, the Hyvä theme is now released under the OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licences, the same family Magento Open Source uses. It is installed with free licence keys from a hyva.io account, and Hyvä compatibility modules are also available with the free key.
What it means for you: The licence fee that used to apply to every store is gone. Moving off Luma or Porto is now purely a question of migration effort, which makes the business case much easier for small and mid-sized stores.

Hyvä UI becomes a separate paid product
With the theme now free, Hyvä UI (the library of ready-made headers, footers, menus, sliders and other components) is sold as a stand-alone commercial product. Stores that bought a Hyvä Theme licence before 10 November 2025 keep their Hyvä UI access.
What it means for you: New stores need to budget for Hyvä UI separately if they want its components. (When you choose a custom design for a new store with us, we cover Hyvä UI.)

Hyvä Checkout no longer needs a paid theme licence
Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce and Hyvä Enterprise remain commercial products, but Hyvä Checkout now works with the free theme. Its listed price is a €1,000 one-time licence per Magento installation, with an optional support and updates plan from the second year.
What it means for you: You can adopt the free theme now and add Hyvä Checkout later when it makes commercial sense. See Hyvä Checkout implementation.

Current requirements: Magento 2.4.4-p9+ and PHP 8.1–8.4
Current Hyvä releases (1.3.11 and later) support Magento 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p7, 2.4.7-p1 and newer, on PHP 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4. The Tailwind build needs Node.js 20 or later. PHP 7.4 is no longer supported.
What it means for you: If your store runs an older Magento or PHP version, plan the upgrade as part of your Hyvä project. We include it in migration quotes when needed.
Hyvä Theme 1.0 launched
Willem Wigman released the first version of Hyvä, a lightweight alternative to Luma built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js.
What it means for you: Hyvä has had several years of production use and a large partner and extension ecosystem, so it is a mature choice rather than an experiment.
